What It Means

Data sovereignty means data is subject to the laws of the jurisdiction where it resides. UK-hosted data falls under UK law (UK GDPR, Investigatory Powers Act, etc.) rather than, say, the US CLOUD Act.

Stance

Dedicated UK hosting provides:

• Data-at-rest in UK datacenters
• Inference processing in UK
• Audit logs stored in UK
• Clear single-jurisdiction sub-processor (the datacenter)
• No US-parent-company data access concerns for some customers

Hyperscale cloud’s UK regions process data in UK but customers are uncertain about parent-company legal obligations under US or other jurisdictions. Dedicated UK providers with UK corporate ownership sidestep this.

Practical

To demonstrate sovereignty:

• Document your infrastructure location in customer contracts
• Log inference traces with timestamps and server identifiers
• Be explicit about sub-processors in your DPA
• Offer a data residency attestation if enterprise buyers need it
