Anthropic’s Claude family is excellent – and priced accordingly. Self-hosting an open model on a RTX 5060 Ti 16GB via our UK dedicated hosting competes very well on cost for Haiku-class workloads, and offers clear data residency advantages for British and European customers. This post maps the crossover.

Claude API pricing
| Model | Input per 1M | Output per 1M | Blended (2:1) | 1B tokens/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku | $0.25 – $1 | $1.25 – $4 | ~$2 | $2,000 |
| Claude Sonnet | $3 | $15 | $7 | $7,000 |
| Claude Opus | $15 | $75 | $35 | $35,000 |
| 5060 Ti dedicated | – | – | flat $380/mo | $380 |
Even against the cheapest Haiku tier, the 5060 Ti is roughly 5x cheaper at 1B tokens/month and about 90x cheaper against Opus pricing.
Quality matching
Realistic open models you can run on a single 5060 Ti 16GB and what Claude tier they approximately replace:
- Llama 3.1 8B FP8 at 112 t/s batch 1 – matches Haiku on short-form summarisation, classification, structured extraction. Weaker on long-context reasoning.
- Qwen 2.5 14B AWQ at 70 t/s – approaches Haiku on multilingual tasks and code generation.
- Mistral 7B at 122 t/s – solid Haiku-class for English, excellent latency.
- Sonnet and Opus cannot be replicated in 16 GB. You would need our RTX 5090 or RTX 6000 Pro to run Llama 3.3 70B, which approximates Sonnet on many tasks.
Break-even volumes
| Replacing | Break-even tokens/month | Equivalent MAU (5 msgs/day, 500 tok) |
|---|---|---|
| Haiku (cheapest tier) | 190M | ~2,500 |
| Haiku (premium pricing) | 95M | ~1,250 |
| Sonnet | 54M | ~720 |
| Opus | 11M | ~150 |
If you are paying Sonnet or Opus rates for any workload that an open model can do, break-even arrives very quickly.
UK data residency and privacy
- Claude API traffic leaves the UK and is processed in Anthropic’s US regions by default. UK government, legal and regulated-industry customers need to document this.
- Our 5060 Ti hosting is UK-resident – data never leaves the jurisdiction unless you send it somewhere.
- No training on your data by design – you control the model and inference stack end to end.
- DPIA-friendly: straightforward to document for UK GDPR purposes.
Which to pick
Stay on Claude if you need Sonnet or Opus quality, if your volume is under 50M tokens/month, or if ops overhead is a hard no. Switch to a dedicated 5060 Ti for Haiku-class workloads above 100M tokens/month, or any volume at all if UK data residency matters. Many teams do both – Claude for the hard tasks, self-hosted for the bulk. See also our OpenAI comparison and break-even calculator.
