NVENC and NVDEC on the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for AI Pipelines

Beyond tensor cores, the 5060 Ti has 9th-gen NVENC and NVDEC video engines. For AI video and vision pipelines they offload work from the tensor cores.

The tensor cores get the AI marketing but the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB also ships with 9th-generation NVENC encoder and NVDEC decoder blocks. For AI video pipelines on our dedicated hosting, they offload huge amounts of work from the tensor cores.

Why Encoders Matter

AI video pipelines involve lots of encode/decode work:

  • Processing video clips for vision models
  • Transcoding generation outputs for web delivery
  • Real-time stream ingestion for live AI analysis
  • Decoding user-uploaded recordings for transcription

Doing this on the CPU starves other work. NVENC/NVDEC offload these tasks to dedicated silicon that runs parallel to tensor cores. Net result: the tensor cores run full-time on AI math instead of waiting for CPU video frames.

Codecs

FormatNVDEC (decode)NVENC (encode)
H.264YesYes
H.265/HEVCYes, up to 8KYes
VP9YesNo
AV1YesYes, 9th-gen improved

AV1 encode on the 9th-gen NVENC is meaningfully better quality than 8th-gen at the same bitrate. For video generation outputs or live streaming, AV1 saves bandwidth with no quality loss.

Throughput

Typical sustained throughput on the 5060 Ti:

  • NVDEC H.264 1080p: ~8 concurrent streams at 60 fps
  • NVDEC H.265 4K: ~3-4 concurrent 30 fps streams
  • NVENC AV1 1080p: 3-4 concurrent streams at 60 fps
  • NVENC H.265 1080p: 8-10 concurrent

Pipelines That Use Them

  • Video analysis: decode incoming stream via NVDEC, pass frames to YOLO or CLIP via tensor cores, no CPU involvement
  • AI video editing: decode source, process frames through diffusion, encode output via NVENC
  • Webcam-based AI apps: real-time video analysis with zero CPU decode overhead
  • Video generation: encode model output (LTX Video, SVD) to deliverable format
  • Meeting recording processing: decode Zoom/Teams recordings for Whisper transcription

When They Sit Idle

For pure LLM workloads, pure embedding, or text-only pipelines, NVENC/NVDEC are unused. They are bonus capacity for video and vision AI products. If your roadmap includes any video analysis or generation, this capacity is valuable.
